Late May to September brings warm days for hiking and outdoor cafes on Council Square, while December turns the old town into a proper Christmas market with mulled wine under the Black Church. January and February are best if the goal is skiing at nearby Poiana Brasov.
The old town is compact and entirely walkable, with the cable car handling the climb up Tampa. For Bran, Rasnov or Poiana Brasov, use the cheap regional buses from the autogara, a taxi, or a rented car if you want flexibility to stop along the way.
Skip the queues at Bran Castle by visiting Rasnov Fortress first thing in the morning, then arrive at Bran right after lunch when the tour buses have thinned out.
